Fire Island Lighthouse A Pillar of New York Harbor History
The Oldest Operating Lighthouse along the East Coast!
The Fire Island Lighthouse is located at the westernmost portion of Robert Moses State Park. It is the oldest operating Lighthouse on the East Coast. Along with the lighthouse at Montauk Point, the Fire Island Lighthouse helped to safely guide millions of ships into the New York Harbor. Built in 1858 as a replacement for a previous lighthouse, found to be inadequate to the volume of ships using the local waters, the 166 foot tall lighthouse operated continually until 1974 when it officially closed.
Since 1982 the Fire Island Preservation society along with the Fire Island National Seashore have restored the lighthouse to operating condition and have made it into one of the islands foremost symbolic, educational and recreational landmarks. Nestled amidst the wild blueberries and the beach plums, the Fire Island Lighthouse is perhaps one of the most picturesque sites on the island.
