Located Between The Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, A Great Place to Live Year Round or Visit in the Summer
Visitors come from all around the world to visit the Unique and Beautiful Fire Island. Fire Island is unique for its lack of motor vehicles. Locals, summer residents, and daily visitors get around by walking, bicycle, or water taxi. Fire Island is accessible by primarily ferry only in the summer. Winter residents are able to gain access from Robert Moses State Park. Fire Island is only about ½ mile wide at its widest and a couple of hundred feet wide at its narrowest. Fire Island is full of fun with its beautiful beaches, unique shops, great night Life, dining, and natural attractions. Coming from the western most part of the island you first hit the Fire Island lighthouse, which was first lit in 1858 and the beam is visible for 24 miles. Tours of the lighthouse are given every hour. Going further east you will hit several small communities, each with its own character. Here are some of the communities on Fire Island from West to East: Kismet is the western most town on Fire Island. It is accessible from Robert Moses Field 5 with just a short walk along the beach. Kismet is another town that is well known for its summer share beach rentals. It is also well known for its night life and party atmosphere. Saltaire is a very quiet and private family-oriented community on Fire Island. This community features many recreational activities for its residents including: tennis courts, basketball courts, sports fields, youth programs, and even a yacht club with sailing instructions. Fair Harbor is a place for New York City vacationers. Both singles and family’s come to Fair Harbor to enjoy the relaxed and casual atmosphere.
Dunewood is known for its family oriented community. Dunewood is a town of residents only and does not allow summer rentals. Lonelyville is a town for those who want to get away from it all. This part of Fire Island is very secluded and has no stores, bars, or crowds. Atlantique is a GREAT place for visitors by boat. Many come in to the large marina at Atlantique and spend time in the picnic area or take a short walk over to the beach. Atlantique is a popular destination for day or weekend boaters. Robins Rest is a very small community on Fire Island with only about 40 residential houses. Robins Rest is a peaceful town that is known for its one restaurant and hotel “Tequila Jacks”. Ocean Beach is the most popular town on Fire Island. This town has the most Restaurants, Beaches, and Stores. Ocean Beach also keeps many regulations. It has developed a reputation as “The Land of No”. Although it has many regulations it remains to be the most popular summer community on Fire Island. Corneille Estates is a popular place for young and single professionals. Many singles go to this community in Fire Island for its summer share beach houses. It is a small community just to the west of Ocean Beach with beautiful winding boardwalks. Seaview is a community with a strong emphasis on family living. Seaview in known for its beautiful landscaping and majestic architecture. Ocean Bay Park is well known for its party atmosphere and all night dancing. Ocean Bay Park generally has a younger crowd of summer renters and has less regulations than many of the other Fire Island communities. It is considered to be a more carefree and laid back community. Point O’Woods is one of the oldest towns on Fire Island and is known for its year round residents. It is not a place for summer rentals or day vacationers. This town on Fire Island even has a 15 foot fence to keep the party people from Ocean Bay Park out of their quiet little community. Sailors Haven is a town on Fire Island with no residential homes. It is for day trips only and allows access to the Sunken Forest. Cherry Grove is well known for its predominantly gay community. It is known as one of the first and oldest gay communities. Cherry Grove is also a popular place for artistic expression and meticulously maintained Homes. Walking around you will find the creative landscaping, murals, art galleries, theatrical productions, and paintings in which the locals are involved in. Fire Island Pines is the largest town on Fire Island. Along with its neighboring community of Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines is also known for its predominately gay community. Fire Island Pines is also well known for its summer share beach rentals and its upscale real estate. Davis Park is found on the eastern most part of Fire Island and is known for its boating community. It features a large 250 boat marina and is a Great town for both singles and family’s.
