GROWING UP IN BAYBERRY POINT, ISLIP, NEW YORK

"Islip is rich in history and has amazing families that have blended into the large melting pot of the Islip's"

Growing up in Bayberry Point, Islip’s Waterfront community with homeowners association, Tennis Club and Yacht Club for Junior Sailors.

Wow where do I start.  First you must know a brief description of my family and my position on the Tree.  I was born in South Side Hospital in 1963 the last of Five Children, Which was an average size family in the 70s almost every house on the Elder rd and the surrounding streets had families with kids and there were so many kids we would all have so much interaction as there was lots to do Here’s a few quick highlights of growing up in Bayberry with so many wonderful families.  Building slide swings from the tallest trees in our yards, walking over to the boat basin to see if there were any new crabs to catch on the dock, having water balloon fights from our row boats and having some of the older folks “the Gershwin’s” join, in the Canal, Diving from the bow of Mr. Santjers boat the Queen Mary, Caulking the bottom of dads boat that never made it in that year.  Sliding down the slide that my dad and I installed in our pool.

Sailing at the bayberry Yacht club with my brothers and the neighborhood kids.  Family and neighborhood picnics all summer long, Learning how to swim at the Islip beach with a neighborhood instructor. Flying Kites on windy days at the Islip town beech or Sherwood School field. Riding Bicycles in a safe neighborhood atmosphere. Picking wild Blueberries along the hedges on East Bayberry rd. helping clean up the community and boat basin. Week end gatherings at Atlantique on Fire Island, winter time is just as special as we used to Ice skate on the canals and there is a great lake across from Sherwood school. Walking to the

My brothers myself and a handful of neighborhood friends used to fish in the man maid lake behind our houses there is a lake in the shape of a hart owned by the Sckully family and Mrs. Skully had stocked the lake with large mouth bass and Sunnies, we spent a lot of time fishing on the lake and just exploring the vast lands known as the Skully Estate.

At the end of elder rd before the last house was built, we called it the turn around, we road our minbikes and go-carts and had a great dirt driveway, to the end of the property and then a turn around at the end there were also a couple of mounds of dirt that were just in the perfect spot and made great jumps for our minbikes and small motorized vehicles that we had in the 70s. there was also a berm on the south side of the property and on the other side was the Islip town beech, The berm maid a great spot to make forts and hiding areas where groups of  us kids from Bayberry used to play in the summer we could hop the fence and enjoy candy from the consetion at the Islip beech. My favorite was the wide thin stripped  Taffy and also the candy necklaces and oh yes how could ever forget I always according to one of my favorite neighbors Still in Bayberry today with her own fresh family of 6, had a big buddy 12” chewing gum with me and a wad of gum in my side cheek.

My neighbor Ritchie had a scooter which had a little problem the throttle was stuck open and rich was a few years older then me and was able to handle running it like that, well I could talk just about any of the older kids into anything, rich let me try the scooter warning me of the problem but of course I begged and probably offered to do some of his chores, any way away I went, in the boat basin across the parking lot and write thru the Gershwin’s white slotted fence. Well luckily for Rich and I only the Scooters handle bars broke off and we had to repair the Gershwin’s fence.  Eric Tony and I used to raise around in our small boats I had a sears game fisher with a Nine and a half horsepower Evinrude Tony had an 11 foot Skimmer with a ten horsepower mercury and Eric had an old wooden skiff that with a brand new six horsepower evinrude, we had great times in these boats around the canals and zipping up and down Champlain’s creek in East Islip, we even water skied and wake surfed in Champlain’s Creek. I guess it was kind of like scenes from the little rascals but on a Daily basis!!

Righting this peace has brought back a lot of memories for me and  the greatest thing to remember is the great gift that my parent gave to by moving to Islip and raising us in such a wonderful wonderful world

Thanks Mom and Dad for giving me a great stable environment to live in and for making our child hood seem so perfect.

My Dad was a Tugboat Engineer and had a moderate income, My mom seemed to stretch it to the max and we were never in want of much although in this day in age I am sure it would have been difficult to keep up with the Jones’s and I am glad they don’t have that stress, We had a great upbringing and I owe my  parents the world for finding such a great place to raise there family. My Mom grew up in Ozone Park and my Dad is from Howard beech. He is 82 know and still resides in our family house on Elder rd. he is surrounded by a few neighbors from the past and many new families that seem to fit right in and he has great interaction with everyone including going to the association picnics and holiday parties.

To all readers this is just a touch of what first came to mind when thinking of the things that made me appreciate the town my parents decided to raise us in Islip is rich in history and has amazing families that have blended into the large melting pot of the Islip’s, we all seem to stick around, sometimes venturing off to other states as spouses and business sometimes steers us away but most of us always seem to come back very close to our home town if not in it.

I loved growing up in Bayberry and I can only hope its as good for the new families moving in as it was for us Original Little Rascals of Bayberry Point.

My name is Dave Sanders I Grew on Elder rd where my dad John still resides, I live just out side Bayberry in a great little community called Snug Harbor, next to the maple street dock where the old Doxsee clam canning company used to be. I started a water taxi company South Bay Water Taxi in 1983 when I was 19 years old, I ran the business very hard for over 20 years, I was very successful managing all facets of the business. When I sold the company to my competitor Fire Island Ferry in 2003 I thought they would be most able to handle what I had created.  Since then I have been selling real estate and am about to celebrate my first year at Netter Real Estate.  I have found my new home here at Netter and plan on doing another 20 because its such a wonderful company that is being run with similar morals to what I am used to, honest hardworking people tying to do the best for their boss because he leads us like he would his family. Good moral and rules that have to be followed.

Let my business knowledge and experience of the local communities go to work for you, I know everyone in the Town of Islip you need to know from legal to general contractors, low cost flood insurance to what ever you may need including but not limited to help with Cos, land subdivision, etc We handle every aspect of real estate here at Netter with over 30 years of experience in the real estate business.
