Upcoming Changes in West Islip Reported by the Willetts Point Civic Committee

Willetts Point Civic Committee Report,

March 2009        John Davis, Chairman

The Willetts Point Civic Committee has been an active part of our community for many decades. The objective of this committee is to protect the interests of our neighborhood by acting as a group representing our organization when issues arise involving town and local government, and when the nature and character of our community is involved or threatened.

Now and for the past two years a tremendous number of changes are taking place, or being planned, that will impact the general appearance of West Islip and our shopping areas. Many of these changes are long overdue and many of the properties involved have been poorly maintained or become dilapidated. The gradual deterioration of these business and commercial properties has a negative impact on our quality of life and on real estate values. Generally, the proposed changes are regarded as improvements and are supported by civic groups including ours.

The top ten projects currently being considered, planned, or underway include:

1- Ukranian Church property on Montauk Highway west of Higbie Lane

  2- Former Babylon Ford Property

  3- LaGrange  building and property

4- Licatta property on Montauk Highway opposite Higbie Lane

5- Professional building and house/office on Montauk Highway diagonally across from Secatogue Lane

6- The Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology building at 759 Montauk Highway

7- The Moose Lodge on Union Blvd.just west of Higbie Lane

8- Stop & Shop center on Union Blvd

9- The Country Deli property on Higbie Lane at Hawley Avenue

10- The former West Islip Florist property on Higbie Lane
