Wheelchairs And Veterans Enjoying Summer -- come have fun while raising money to keep W.A.V.E.S. afloat!

W.A.V.E.S. stands for Wheelchairs And Veterans Enjoying Summer and is a unique organization that allows small groups of physically and mentally challenged people to experience a day of fishing and sightseeing on the Great South Bay.  They have worked successfully with the most challenged populations of children and adults with:  AUTISM,  MS,  MD,  SPINAL CORD INJURIES,  TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES, DOWN SYNDROME AND ALL DISABLED VETERANS.

Clifford "Captain KIP" Johannesen with a W.A.V.E.S. passenger

W.A.V.E.S. was founded by lifelong Long Islander Clifford Johannesen – better known as “Captain KIP.”  Captain KIP worked as a Commercial diver for Local 1456 Dockbuilders Union until he broke his neck in a diving accident in 1983.  Early on as he recovered from his injury, Captain KIP was confined to a wheelchair.  He tried to partake in the simple joy of the Great South Bay but he had a lot of difficulty finding a vessel that was equipped to accommodate his wheelchair.  With a great deal of determination and physical therapy, Captain KIP walks with the aid of an assistance dog named Liberty (a.k.a. Libby).  He was able to return to work, this time for Verizon.  When Captain KIP retired, he remembered how disappointed he was when he was unable to go boating while he was wheelchair-bound and how wonderfully free he felt once he was able to go boating again.  He decided to make it possible for the disabled to share in the unique pleasure and freedom being out on the Great South Bay brings, even if they are wheelchair-bound.  Captian KIP owns and runs the 34′ downeast “Valhalla” whose purpose is to take people out who ordinarily wouldn’t get the chance to fish or boat because of any of their disabilities.

W.A.V.E.S. lives up to its name. These folks in their wheelchairs are enjoying summer like they never have before!

Captain KIP, volunteers and donations are what keeps W.A.V.E.S. afloat.  The boat trips are free for the veterans and diabled passengers but each trip costs about $350 in fuel, supplies and maintenance.  Please join us in a day of fun and fundraising to help keep W.A.V.E.S. afloat.
