Oakdale, Long Island, Idle Hour - The Artist Colony

Oakdale, Idle Hour

Oakdale, Artist Colony

The Artist Colony

Concealed in a quiet enclave south of the Montauk Hwy, the Artists’ Colony in Oakdale remains a tranquil setting relatively hidden from the public. No commercial centers to interfere with the authentic historic community. Throughout the yearly cycle, a bike tour is known to pass through in early spring, and during the winter holiday season, you may get a view of Santa Claus riding on top of the local fire truck to spread holiday cheer. Other than that, local tourists from neighboring towns occasionally ride through to share a look at “Munchkin Land.” On occasion, you may encounter a neighbor looking for a lost dog or couples riding bikes/working on well kept gardens reminiscent of Georgetown. The name is derived from the unique assortment of former animal pens of the W.K. Vanderbilt Estate, Idle Hour, nestled close to Dowling College and the Great South Bay. Bought by a philanthropist/artists for a summer artists’ colony, the community was eventually bought by individual buyers. Many who were interested in preserving the historic nature of the place and the task has been lovingly passed down from generation to generation.

What more comfort could one find than this lovely home next to a true storybook community?  A wonderful place to raise a family with the local (Connetquot ) Idle Hour Elementary school just outside the brick fortress of the colony. For residents who are interested in the sea, there is a system of canals running through the neighborhood that once supplied the irrigation to the Vanderbilt’s farmland. These same canals can now take you in boat or kayak out into the Great South Bay and beyond. Once past the Snapper Inn, with a view of the Bayard Cutting Arboretum, it’s just a turn to the port towards Fire Island.  The Artists’ Colony also has a tiny pig wallow which through the Lobbying of locals has been restored.

For Idle Hour Residents there is a Beach Club on the Bay with a Kidde Pool, Large main Pool and a Snack Shack.  Here the community gathers for local holiday parties and Seasonal get together.  There are Several Large Marinas’ for all of your boating needs and wonderful Long time established Seafood Restaurants along the Conetquot River.

We have many homes available in this delightful community.

Living in Idle Hour of Oakdale

September 16th, 2008 Netter Real Estate Posted in Long Island Waterfront, Oakdale Real Estate No Comments »

Canal Road

Living in Idle Hour in Oakdale is very special – I know – I live there.  The community is rich with the history of the Vanderbilt Estate which encompassed all of the area south of Montauk Highway and was bordered by the Connetquot River.  If you turn off of Montauk Highway onto Idle Hour Boulevard and follow the road as it winds its way past Dowling College and the lovely historic houses scattered among the lovely modern ones you will arrive at the Tower Mews.  At the ancient clock tower, continue through the two brick arches, pass the Artist Colony homes and the Hog Wallow, now a lovely fish pond, and continue on Tower Mews as it twists and turns.  Turn left on Canal Road and you arrive at Marlboro Lagoon.  You have arrived at a truly lovely place to live, play, entertain and enjoy boating.

Fortunately, you can make this beautiful area of Idle Hour your home!  The house at 20 Canal Road is for sale.  Every room offers water views of Marlboro Lagoon, The Grand Canal, adjoining canals or even the Connetquot River.  Custom built by the present owners, this house was designed for this particular corner of paradise.  A wall of windows faces the lovely lagoon.  A deck adjoining the family room area of the open floor plan is the perfect place to relax near the majestic Weeping Willow tree and just feet away from the 60 foot dock where the boat is tied awaiting your next cruise or fishing trip minutes away on the Great South Bayl

With a private office with outside entrance, a dance studio/exercise room, an in ground pool surrounding with a deck for relaxing or entertaining and a two room cabana with a full bath room – you will find a lot of activity here – if you choose.  Or on the second floor, there are two extra large family bedrooms with exceptionally large closets, a new marble bath and a master suite set off to by its self.  The Master Bedroom has a wall of windows overlooking the lagoon, cathedral ceilings, a spa bathroom with Jacuzzi bath, skylight, marble bath and double sinks in a marble vanity and a walk in closet which extends in to a storage room.

If you believe the kitchen is the heart of the home, your heart will be thrilled to see this kitchen!  Completely redone a year ago, the custom cabinets, semi-circular leaded glass window  and stainless steel appliances are wonderful.  The most stunning element is the waterfall granite counters and backsplash and granite sink.  The counter stools where customer made to match the granite and are included with the house.

Idle Hour

Boating in the warm months and a cozy fire in the 16 foot high granite fireplace in step down living room with radiant heated floors on cold days make this a home to enjoy every day of the year.

To see this wonderful opportunity for yourself, call Netter Real Estate at 631 661-5100 and ask for Jeanne O’Neill, Listing Agent and Idle Hour resident.
